Our Story

North to the Future

Proprietor and entrepreneur Bernie Karl had a humble start on his way to Alaska, but upon arriving he found the state to be rich with opportunities. Shortly after learning how valuable large machinery provided by Caterpillar was for miners and contractors in Alaska he opened up a business which dealt with the repairing and reselling of large machinery. His early endeavors in the repairing and reusing of large machinery proved fruitful and quickly grew into what is now K&K Recycling. Today K&K Recycling recycles everything from used machinery to used cardboard. The whole gamut of acceptable recyclable materials and their rates can be found at the K&K Recycling, Inc homepage.

Bernie and his wife Constance Mae Parks-Karl have since purchased Chena Hot Springs Resort at the end of Chena Hot Springs Road in Fairbanks Alaska. Under Bernie's leadership the resort as become almost entirely self-sufficient, and it has spawned two subsidiary companies, Chena Power, LLC and Chena Fresh. Chena Power utilizes the sustainable and efficient power of geothermal energy provided by the natural hot springs on site to heat the entire resort. In addition, Chena Fresh uses geothermal energy, special LED grow lights and hydroponic technology to grow vegetables in their green houses all year long. Despite freezing temperatures in Fairbanks winters of  -60 Fahrenheit and colder the green houses manage to produce fresh vegetables for the resort's kitchen and for sale all winter long.

Currently Bernie and his team are working hard to make Fairbanks and rural Alaska sustainable for future generations. Chena Power offers effective and smart ways to reduce outrageous energy costs due to the high cost of oil. Bernie Karl and his team provide alternative heat sources such as wood and coal in order to drastically reduce the cost of energy in Alaska. Bernie's vision is to make Alaska a sustainable state and safe money for the Alaskan economy by changing how we heat and run our homes, our businesses and our community. For more information on how Chena Power can help you reduce your energy costs please contact us or simply call us at our main office off the Richardson Highway 907-488-1910.
